Grůndtliche vñ eigentlichte Beschreibung der Fechtkunst ("Thorough and Proper Description of the Art of Fencing") is a German fencing manual written by Hans Wilhelm Schöffer von Dietz and initially printed in 1620. Copies of the 1620 edition are held by the Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen in Göttingen, Germany and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, Germany. The treatise seems to present Schöffer's interpretation of Salvator Fabris' system of rapier fencing; parts of the treatise are extracted from Fabris' 1606 fencing manual, but other parts seem to represent Schöffer's original interpolations of the Italian master's art.

Publication History

The first edition of Grůndtliche vñ eigentlichte Beschreibung der Fechtkunst was printed in Marburg, Germany in 1620 by Johan Saurn. It may have been reprinted in 1640, but as no copies of this edition are known to exist, the few references to it may simply be erroneous allusions to the 1620 printing.
